Who are Lodge Dental?

Lodge Dental is an award-winning private dental practice located in the scenic town of Abergavenny, South Wales. With a highly experienced and dedicated team, the practice delivers top-tier dental care in a comfortable, modern, and relaxed environment. Beyond patient care, the practice is committed to advancing dental education through innovative technology. 

Lodge Dental’s Brief:

Lodge Dental required a state-of-the-art audiovisual system to support the training and education of dental professionals across a wide range of technologies. The goal was to create a system that offered flawless visual reinforcement in the training room, ensuring accurate and detailed guidance for all attendees. 

The solution also needed to be user-friendly, allowing non-technical operators and guest lecturers to run the system without prior training, all while maintaining a professional and polished look.

The Challenge

The project took place within a Victorian building that had been stripped back to its original stone and fully redeveloped, giving us a rare opportunity to specify infrastructure correctly from the outset rather than working around legacy constraints. The main challenge was that the dental training space also needed to function as the client reception area and a post-event hospitality space, complete with bar and coffee facilities. This meant the AV system couldn’t feel like a traditional classroom installation and instead had to complement a high-end, welcoming environment. The physical layout added further complexity, with a relatively compact L-shaped footprint and a large bi-fold door opening onto a terrace, which ruled out projection due to ambient light and the client’s desire to keep the space open and bright.

The Technology Behind the Solution

At the heart of Lodge Dental’s new system is the AREC LS-860 media workstation. This all-in-one device provides seamless source switching between cameras and laptop feeds, advanced video logic functions, including split-screen and Picture-in-Picture, custom overlays and course-specific branding, adding a polished production finish.  

To manage complex audio routing and overall system integration, a Symetrix Prism processor was installed. This system handles: wireless microphones for trainers, background music in training areas, unified touchscreen control for non-technical operators  

For added flexibility, presenters can control the system via wireless laptop interface, mirroring the main touchscreen and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) portal through AREC Director software, enabling control from mobile phones  

All video inputs are transmitted using Blustream HEX11WP-TX HDMI over HDBaseT, ensuring reliable, high-quality visuals throughout the facility. 

Interactive Displays for Immersive Learning

To deliver visually engaging training, we installed two Optoma 86" Interactive Flat Panels in the main training room and an additional monitor in the surgery, allowing dental surgeons to monitor procedures while focusing on the main camera feed. 

This setup ensures that all trainees can clearly see demonstrations, step-by-step procedures, and live lectures, enhancing the learning experience and improving knowledge retention. 

The screens also double as digital signage displays when the room is in ‘dental practice’ mode.

The Result for Lodge Dental:

The AV system has been a game-changer for Lodge Dental’s training program. Feedback from both staff and visiting dental professionals has been overwhelmingly positive. Key outcomes include: seamless weekly use for multiple training sessions, easy operation for guest lecturers and non-technical staff, professional, polished visuals and audio that enhance learning and long-term reliability and scalability for future courses
